All About Eye Care
Eye care is an important part of your health and well-being. On this page, we will focus on the following aspects of eye care.
- Maintaining healthy eyes and eyesight
- The need for eye check-ups
- Children’s eye care
Healthy Eyes and Maintaining Your Eyesight
Your eyes need care and attention if you want to ensure the health of your eyesight. Things you can do to maintain healthy eyes are listed below.
- Eat a well-balanced diet: The food you eat plays an integral role in the health of your body and can also affect your eyes.
- Avoid touching or rubbing your eyes: This can cause irritation and spread bacteria.
- Protect your eyes from UV rays with sunglasses: High levels of UV radiation mean you need to wear sunglasses to reduce your exposure to harmful rays.
- Avoid smoking: Smoking can increase your risk of certain eye diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration.
- Schedule regular eye exams with an eye care professional: This ensures your optometrist can detect or monitor any eye conditions or diseases that affect the health of your eyes.
Eye Touching: Is it Safe?
In general, is it not good to touch or rub your eyes, especially if your hands are dirty. Any touching of your eyes can spread infection and potentially make things worse.
If you are struggling with rubbing itchy or dry eyes, try using lubricating eye drops which will add moisture to your eyes and can relieve the need to rub them.
Sore Eyes: What to do
It is not uncommon to experience sore eyes, but it can be confusing to know what is normal and when you should see your eye doctor. If you are experiencing eye pain, it is best you see your local eye care professional, especially if the pain is paired with vision problems, headaches, or nausea.
Book an appointment with an independent optometrist in-store where they can perform a comprehensive eye exam and answer any and all questions or concerns.
Blue Light Glasses
Blue light glasses are used to help block rays that could potentially cause discomfort and strain to your eyes. They are popular with people who spend a lot of time in front of screens such as at work or when gaming.
While blue light glasses are effective at blocking blue light emitted from digital screens, it is still too early in the research to determine the effectiveness of these filters and whether they are protecting your eyes from damage.
The Importance of Sunglasses With UV Protection
Sunglasses are indispensable for ensuring that you enjoy the outdoors with clear vision and protection against the sun. All of this is available in Oscar Wylee’s sunglass lenses from tinted to transition lenses with 100% UV protection.
Book an Eye Exam
We direct bill to most major insurance providers when possible, saving you time and saving you from upfront payments.
Eye Check-ups
Regular eye check-ups are crucial for your eye health as not only will they provide you with the prescription you may need for any corrective devices such as glasses, but they can also diagnose eye conditions and diseases.
How Much is an Eye Exam?
Depending on your age and the province you live in, your eye exam may be covered in full or partially by the provincial government. To find out if you’re covered, contact your local Oscar Wylee Canada store or provincial health care office.
How Often Should I Get an Eye Exam?
We recommend that everyone should have a routine eye exam with an optometrist at least once every 2 years. If you are over 65 years old, then a yearly review is advised.

Kids Eye Care
It is recommended for children to have an eye exam:
- When you suspect there may be issues with your child's vision.
- Just before they start school.
- At your discretion, or your optometrist's suggestion.
It is common for children in the classroom to have vision problems. Vision impairment can impact greatly on a child’s learning, confidence, and behaviour. The sooner that vision problems are detected, the better the outcome, and that could make a big difference to your child. At Oscar Wylee, we have qualified, independent optometrists and Kids’ frames for children so you can look after your child's vision.
Not every optometrist performs eye exams on children. Contact your local Oscar Wylee store for more information.
